Interview with Nelly

Nelly is doing her ESC in Madeira. Let`s talk with her.

Aytan: What do you do in Madeira? Why did you choose there?

Nelly: I am doing a historical project here. It´s tourist guiding tours. We guide tourists trough the city center and we tell about the history.

I chose Madeira because I saw the project and it was really nice. It is not like the usual ESC which are mostly at schools or kindergardens. It was a different project and I thought that it`s quite interesting. And it is tropical island. Good weather is a plus.

Aytan: What requirements did you need to adapt there?

Nelly: You need to be able to talk to people, we are 12 volunteers. You have to be able to teach yourself because we learn about the history everyday more. So you have to be able to research for yourself and to teach yourself. You need to communicate with a lot of different people because you do not know how they are. They are always different. Because if you check them you need adapt to your tour a little bit.

Aytan: Isn`t it crazy staying away from home especially in corona time? How did corona affect to your project?

Nelly: For me it`s not difficult staying away from home. I`m on a beautiful island. Corona regulations are not as harsh as in Germany. There are much less cases than in Germany. Stores are open here. Corona here really started in November or in December I guess. Before that we were still able to go to clubs, bars like usual. This was the huge difference to Germany because from March until August we were just home doing nothing.

My project changed a little because we don`t have as much tours right now. We do other things like promotion.

Aytan: Is it your first Youth project? Did you have any fears before and if yes, how did you deal with them?

Nelly: Yes, it is my first project. The first time I`m staying away from home for a longer time. My fear was that not getting along with my roommates. But I have 2 roommates and we are connected very well. I have never been in Madeira or Portugal before. My other fear would be the language and a new city. Because I have never been here. And I had no clue about this city. So the first few days I was just walking around. Without google maps just looking and trying to find stuff and it really helped me. People speak in English very well. I speak some Spanish and Spanish and Portuguese are sometimes quite similar. So that also was not problem at the end.

Aytan: What did you like the most in your project? What would you change?

Nelly:  I love doing tours with the tourists. I mean it is the main part of my project, it is good that I like it the most. What I would change…because right now there is not a lot of things to do so we do not work a lot, we work 4 hours a day, I would prefer doing like literally anything else than just sitting there reading. Maybe they give us stuff for translating. But also we have to adapt somehow because of the current situation.

Aytan: If you could go back in time would you choose Madeira again?

Nelly: Yes, I would choose Madeira again.  I really like the city. And the people I met here they are the nicest people I have met. I made really good friends here. For me that would be the main reason.

Aytan: What do you think about ESC?

Nelly: I think it is a great opportunity for people to meet new people and to see how people live in other countries. To do a project, you would probably never do except for doing ESC. Because I`ve never thought about being tourist guide in my city, so it is good opportunity. But I think they should advertise it more because not a lot of people know about that here. Schools should say like: “There is a opportunity to do that.”.

Aytan: Will you recommend someone to take part in following project? Why?

Nelly: I would definitly recommend this project or any other project. First of all you don´t need to pay anything at all. You get all the money you need, accommodation, food and small pocket money. It is really great for families with low income.

And this project is nice because you are on a beautiful island. You can rent a car and just go around. And while your project you have the opportunity to meet a lot of people. And you learn so much stuff about yourself. I would recommend it 100%.

Aytan: Thank you for your time. All the best in your project!
