Interview with Maciek- reminescence of ‚Let’s sail together 2014!‘

Let’s talk with Maciej, who took part in this project for the first time.
Maciej is 26 years old and comes from Zielona Góra, a city in the west part of Poland. Since last years he has been living in Warsaw and studying Management at the University. In free time he plays rugby and practices martial art – muay tai. He is sensitiv about art, especially literature and theatre. Moreover, he is interested in social life, thus during his studies he was organising a lot of events, for instance “Dzień dawcy szpiku” (Bones Marrow Donors Day). In general he is very open and active person and he has a lot of experience in various fields, but there is a thing that he had never done before – sailing!

Gosia: Maciej, you have never sailed before this project. Please, tell us, why did you have readyness to try it? Did you have any worries about sailing, seasickness or how to pack? Did you have any expectations? Did they live up or were you disappointed or maybe surprised about something?

Maciej: Yes, it is truth that I did not sail before. I just came across the sailor topics in literature or in media. Sometimes some of my friends told me stories about their sailing adventures in Mazury (region in Poland with large connected lakes). In general I like new experiences or challenges and sailing was something undiscovered by me.
When the chance of taking part in a sailing project appeared, I just counted quickly my money and checked free time. I reconsider few things and then it happened – I decided to go.
About expectations- usually I am trying not to expect anything. This project was such a beautiful experience, that probably before I would not be able to imagine this in that way.

Gosia: Was it the first time when you took part in the “Youth in Action” project, where the official language of communication between participants is English and where you have to live with participants from different countries?
Did you have any fears before and, if yes, how did you deal with them?
How did you find yours feet in the international group?

Maciej: It was not the first time when I took part in EU project.
In past I was organising similar projects, but all of them took place in the country of my origin, Poland. Thus, it was not necessary for me there to use foreign languages. If some problems with non-polish speaking participants appeared, my friends were solving them.
In a previous answer I have said that I reconsidered few topics before taking decision to go. It means that I had to confront my fear of foreign group with courage and aspiration of personal development. Foreign languages are definitely my weak points. Involvement in this project helped me to solve this problem. I feel that I found my feet perfectly in this international group. That is why I am enormously thankful to all organisators and participants of ‚Let’s sail together‘. For me it was a big step to open myself for international relations. I am happy that I have discovered that I can do it. It worked out!

Gosia: This year the topic of the project was ‚maritime pollution‘. Did you know something about this problem before? Did you expand the knowledge about this during the workshops? Did it change your perspective and your lifestyle?

Maciej: I am sure the topic is important. It seemed to me already before that I was sensitive to the ecology, the pollution problem, the responsible usage of the Earth and the counscious of sharing it with planty of other organisms and its homeostasis. However, not all aspects were a basis of my acting in a daily life. I think that after the project it is a little bit better with that.
During the workshops we wrote down possibilities how we can improve our proceeding due to the knowledge we have gained. I still remember about those possibilities and I am using them.

Gosia: Have something changed in your perception of young people in different countries? Did you get to know something new about this countries and cultures?

Maciej: I am trying not to look at the people throught the country of origin. I think that knowledge about other cultures develops and helps to get to know better yourself and it has an influance for the better relation with other person, both from the same country and from other.
I got to know plenty of new things about other cultures and countries, from which participants were coming. We even had an “cultural evenings” and it was wonderful time, galore of knowledge and fun.

Gosia: As other participants of the project, you had to actively take part in the sessions about ecology, in team games, in preparing “cultural evening”. Was it for you a “necessary duty” or “fun”?

Maciej: It was a “necessary duty” because a fun is obligatory for me…. I do not know what the project could gain without those organised evenings, but I know how much it could loose. It is a great idea! It is indispensible form of exchange in projects like this. I really liked that everyone was involved in this.

Gosia: What did you like the most in this project and what would you change?

Maciej: I would not change anything! It was wonderful!

Gosia: Will you recommend someone to take part in following project. To whom and why?

Maciej: I think, I will recommend this deffinitely to everyone.

Gosia: Thank you for your time. All the best in discovering world!
