GREAT EVS – The Best Decision ever!

Magda passes the first half EVS …

It’s crazy, what happened during my 3 ½ months EVS in Rostock! Complete a European Year of Volunteering (EVS) was until now the best decision of my life. I don’t know where and how I could have met so many new people, projects and issues in such a short time. In the beginning I didn’t know, what to expect in Germany . That was a big question mark. Will I sit in the office and write e-mails?

The work was very different and versatile: Organizing and Working in the office, a work camp in a former concentration camp, under my direction, and sail on three seas with a European youth group.

First, I was allowed to be part of the project Gulden Leeuw, an intercultural youth project at the sea. Around 40 young committed people from five different countries and a fantastic ship. It was for me an incredible and perfect experience. Of course, life on the ship was not always easy, but even the „bad“ events (such as seasickness)will help me in the future. In summary, it was a great opportunity to bring space together with an European group, without compromising their nationality, religion or social background of the participants would have been of importance. Without Kompass, I would not have made this experience safely.

In connection with my new experiences and a wealth of group games, I was able to try out my skills as a manager in a work camp. In the former concentration camp at Ravensbruck we were translating for a memorial letters of people imprisoned during World War II. Frankly, I had a bit of stress. Although I was prepared, but 10 unknown people from foreign countries, and me  as the „boss“ of all… Every beginning is hard. In the end, I have mastered the matter, and the group had  a lot of fun. Two participants have spend a few days with me in Rostock.

In addition to my Highlights I had to master the office everyday! Just for the mentioned projects it  had so much to be organized. But again, I’ve learned a lot. The combination of theory and practice, I think it’s the best.

In September I attended a EVS Seminar in Berlin. Removed 10 days at a lake about an hour away from the city center. There, I met  16 other EVSler from different countries like Spain and Romania. During this Seminar, we have made a series workshops on various topics such as conflict management. One day a representative of the National Agency for Youth for Europe visited us. This was for my EVS understanding an important day.

Through conversations with the other participants, I found that I was very lucky with my place in Rostock. Unlike others, I had no problems in Rostock. Of course, from time to time I do not get everything right  and it sometimes make mistakes, but these are not problems. This is just my own learning process. My  seminar participants complained to the record on the fact that you have to look for the apartment by yourself, or cannot get the courses count towards your work.

In summary, I am totally satisfied. Happy about my time in Rostock and the world, with my EVS and NIG / compass. I am very grateful for everything that I’ve found here. Above all I found in the office the best chefs in the world with Karsten and Jörg.

I am very grateful for everything that I have experienced here and I will surely rejoice even after the EVS a long time and remember.

You’re the next EVS in Kompass? – I recommend it to you !

Magda
